What types of hearing aids are available? – Below you will find a brief overview of the different models.
Modern hearing aids are available in various designs and are precisely adapted to your personal hearing needs. Depending on the type of hearing loss, the desired wearing comfort and the individual lifestyle, there are various models to choose from - all equipped with the latest hearing acoustics technology.

Behind-the-Ear Hearing Aids (BTE)
Behind-the-ear hearing aids are among the most commonly used hearing systems. They sit comfortably behind the ear, while sound is transmitted via a thin tube to an individually fitted earmold in the ear canal. This ensures a secure fit and reliable sound transmission.
All important components are located in the housing behind the ear: microphone, amplifier, speaker, speech processor, and power supply – optionally with a battery or rechargeable battery. Many models offer easily accessible buttons for volume and programs.
For an active lifestyle, there are particularly robust versions that are protected against moisture, sweat, and dust. BTE devices are also versatile in appearance: they are available in various colors and can be discreetly adapted.
Advantages of Behind-the-Ear Hearing Aids:
-
Space for powerful technology and larger batteries
-
Easy operation thanks to easily accessible buttons
-
Many models with modern rechargeable battery technology
-
Very well suited for open fit with natural sound
-
Wireless connection to smartphone, TV, or accessories possible
What you should consider:
-
The natural amplification by the outer ear is utilized less
-
More visible than ITE devices – yet very discreetly designed
-
May be perceived as unusual for glasses wearers behind the ear
Overview of a BTE Hearing Aid's Structure:
-
Microphone: picks up sound
-
Amplifier: highlights important signals and reduces disruptive noise
-
Speaker: reproduces the sound
-
Speech Processor: individually adjusts the sound profile
-
Volume Control: for quick adjustments
-
Sound Tube & Earhook: guide the sound into the ear
-
Power Supply: battery or rechargeable battery
Behind-the-Ear Hearing Aids (BTE)
In summary, behind-the-ear hearing aids are versatile classics among hearing systems. They sit discreetly behind the ear, are robust, easy to operate, and suitable for almost any type of hearing loss. Learn more about a suitable BTE hearing aid.

In-the-Ear Hearing Aids (ITE) at Hörakustik Welsch
In-the-ear hearing aids are particularly small and worn directly in the ear. Depending on the design, they either sit visibly in the outer ear (concha devices) or almost invisibly deep in the ear canal, as with the very small CIC (Completely-in-the-Canal) models.

All technical components are housed in an individually manufactured casing that is precisely fitted into your ear. For easier removal, some models feature a discreet pull tab.
ITE hearing aids belong to the so-called closed fitting. This means that no control buttons are directly visible on the device. Control is conveniently done via a remote control or a smartphone app. Many models can also be wirelessly connected to TV, mobile phone, or other audio devices.
Advantages of In-the-Ear Hearing Aids:
Very inconspicuous – especially CIC models are barely visible from the outside
Secure fit and comfortable wear, even during movement
Natural hearing by utilizing the ear shape (especially with CIC)
Ideal for glasses wearers, as no device sits behind the ear
Possible limitations:
Generally suitable for mild to moderate hearing loss
Due to the small design, more frequent battery changes are often necessary
Suitability depends on the individual shape of the ear canal
Audio connections or telecoils only possible with larger models
In-the-Ear Hearing Aids (ITE)
ITE hearing aids are small, discreet hearing aids that sit directly in the ear and are custom-fitted. They offer high wearing comfort, are barely visible, and are particularly suitable for mild to moderate hearing loss.
